Analysis of a student film opening Rural Superheros

Analysing other students film openings will help me appreciate the possible outcome I can achieve with my own film opening. It will help me see how they have used their creativity and the techniques they have used within the film opening and which bits are good and which bits are bad allowing me to understand the possible mistakes they have used which will help me not make those same mistakes when it comes to my company producing a film opening.

Rural Superheros

Genre
The genre is established within the opening scene as being a comedy. This is done with the use of humour by the "nerd," "hippy," and "cowboy" concerning the speech between the three of them. Shots like the mug shot also help establish the indie theme with the genre.

Editing
A fade from black is the first bit of editing used. The editing is continuous and flows. The editing is slow paced creating a relaxing effect.
Sound
The non diagetic sound at the start is a typical classical song that is used to create a false impression of the genre. The sudden change of music emphasised the actual genre making it an effect use of sound to the audience. The diagetic speech carries a comical aspect to it showing off the humour theme.
Camera angles
The camera angles used effectively allow the audience to compare the characters shown in the opening sequence through a three shot which contains each of the characters. The close ups allow the audience to study each character
Mise en scene
The scenery like the tent have obviously been thought through before filming. The costumes portray the stereotypical impressions of the "nerd" "hippie" and "cowboy"
Titles
The titles are not integrated into the opening sequence. The title of the film is not aesthetically pleasing but the order sequence is correct.
Characters
The characters are very effectively introduced to the audience though mise on scene, diagetic speech and camera angles. They are each stereotypical representations of different category's of people.

Evaluation
This opening sequence gives very little away about the events that will unravel through out the film. This is good as the audience are kept in suspense. The fade into blacks used through the opening sequence gives the opening sequence a trailer feel which isn't what an opening sequence should portray. The camera angles gives some effective shots which allows the audience to compare and contrast the characters introduced. overall this is a good opening sequence.
